Some covers just work together...and some, not so much. I've decided to start up a semi-regular feature called Shelfmates to showcase series covers. I love getting the sequel to a novel and putting it up next to the first book so I thought this might be a fun way to do that on my blog! So here are some series covers and my opinions on how they look as a couple (or series...)!

Goddess Test series by Aimee Carter

First up we have a bunch of very similar covers. I have to say though, even though these covers are very close, I think they work because they are different enough. I love that they kept the Greek-like pattern on all five covers and stuck with the lush green background and white dress. I think the one that is the most interesting to look at is The Goddess Legacy (2.5) though because they did the most with the shape her body makes. I do wish that book 2 (Goddess Interrupted) and 3 (The Goddess Inheritance) looked a bit more diverse rather than being face close-ups.

Angel series by L.A. Weatherly

I do like these covers together but I think I'm going to need to see the third one in the series to really judge it. The reason for me is that I don't understand the color pattern of the background yet. I don't really think the burnt orange of the first and the white and black of the second look that great together but a third novel could tie them in and make them look good. On their own they aren't much to look at though I love the tentacle-like shine coming off the titles. They added foil to the actual covers which makes them even more attractive.

Under the Never Sky series by Veronica Rossi

For me, these covers are pretty much perfection. I love the simpleness of them with the person being the main focus and the bursting colors in the background. I can automatically tell that these are part of a series. Had I not loved the first one, I would still be drawn to both covers because they look interesting. It's not like everything else out there. I've always thought the first one worked well and was really surprised to see that they were able to capture the appeal of the first with the second.

 

Nevermore series by Kelly Creagh

There isn't really any reason for me to like these covers as much as I do. They're just faces. But I just love the both models so much and think they look perfect. I love how in the first book cover, the blonde girl is soft in a pink lacey top but in the second she is so much stronger in a black sweetheart neckline. I'm also in love with the words leaking through the first cover and the trees in the second. These really work for me!

 

There are my batch of covers for the week. I think out of this bunch, Goddess Test covers are the weakest and Under the Never Sky covers are definitely the best for me.

Soul Seekers series by Alyson Noel

My first series up today is the Soul Seekers series. I've always liked the first novel cover because of the warm colors, the way her hair turns into birds and the dreamcatcher earrings. I thought that the combo worked really well. My intial reaction to the second cover was that it was also gorgeous but to me it feels less interesting. I think it is because they went with the pretty dress trend and we've already seen so much of it. I do like that it is turning into snow though. I think it adds an unique touch. Overall I think these work well on their own and in the series. My favorite cover is still the first one though!

Fallen series by Lauren Kate

I don't think I can compare covers and not include this series in these posts. I've pretty much loved most of them so I knew I had to include them eventually. I think that for the most part, Luce and her pretty black dresses (and one white one) knock it out of the park. My only exception to this rule is Passion. That cover has always driven me crazy because it doesn't work. Whoever worked on that cover touched up the model's arms to the point that they are non-existant. The girl's arms and shoulders look like a skeleton which totally takes away from the cover for me. I think my favorite of the series is actually Rapture but that might be because it stands out with its white dress.

Matched triology by Ally Condie

I remember seeing the cover for Matched on a blog before I was blogging anf being completely in love with it. After the spines and spines of black and dark blue, here was a white cover and it was so striking. I love everything about the cover for Matched still. Then I saw the cover for Crossed and was so disappointed. It didn't have half as much appeal as Crossed. Luckily, they made up for it with Reached which is back to its gorgeous appeal. I still think I like Matched best out of the bunch though!

Watersong series by Amanda Hocking

This is another novel that I fell in love with at first sight. The water is so blue and looks inviting but the skyline and moon look ominus. It's hard not to keep looking. I think Lullaby is the same way. It shows the turmoil of the first novel in the crashing waves and I love how the girl (who I'm assuming is Harper) isn't in the water because she's never gotten the allure of it. Both covers really work for me together and as a pair.

So there you have my set of four covers. I'm not sure if I can pick a favorite of the bunch though it seems that so far the Watersong series has been consistently strong. However, the fact that only one out of the five Lauren Kate covers bothers me are still pretty good stats.

So here are some series covers and my opinions on how they look as a couple (or series...)!

Fallen World by Megan Crewe

I'm not sure these covers are anything special but I do like the way they look because they are different than a lot of what's out on shelves now. The first novel looks like a big warning sign with it's bright yellow and the second looks so forlorn. I think separately and together these are pretty solid if not a little dull.

Shades of London by Maureen Johnson

We're dealing with a cover change here. I know the opinions for The Name of the Star hardcover were split. People either really liked it or really didn't. I was one of the people who liked it so I'm a little sad to see the change. However, I think these new covers are really interesting. There isn't really anything new about a girl's face on the cover but it's the cracked skin that makes this unique. I like these a lot together too. The second cover is just different enough but they look good together.

Tempest by Julie Cross

We've got another cover change here for Tempest and I've got to say that I'm really not too wild about it. I loved the first cover and this one is sort of cheapens the first one in my opinion. I mean, it's okay and it works well with the second one but I'm just not a fan of these after knowing what it used to look like. I do think the backgrounds look really neat though and I love the color usage.

Mythos Academy by Jennifer Estep

My favorite of these covers by far is Kiss of Frost because it feels beautiful and magical. I'm really not a fan of the first cover but the thrid and fourth are alright. Overall, I feel like they don't necessarily fit together very well. The first and second covers look like they belong in their own separate series and the third and fourth look like they work together. It's no contest for me which cover is the best in this series!

Nightshade Prequels by Andrea Cremer

So these books are the prequels to the Nightshade series. They look a lot like the new Nightshade covers but I like these a lot better. They both have a lot of drama and look like they are part of the series. My only compliant would be that the girl on the Rise cover looks drawn whereas the girl on Rift looks like a photograph. I just wish they were a bit more consistent together but I still like them.

I think my favorite of this bunch is most definitely Shades of London series but the Nightshade Prequels are a close second. What do you guys think?

So here are some series covers and my opinions on how they look as a couple (or series...)!

Stork by Wendy Delsol

I've always been a fan of these covers. I realize that there are a lot of covers with girl's faces in YA but for me, these are an example of faces done right. I feel like the offer more to look at than just the face in the colors and background which adds interest in a little bit of enhancement to them. Plus, I don't think any of these girl's are "typically" beautiful. They all are a little different which makes them interesting. Just as I love this series, I love their covers!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

I've always thought that the first novel's cover was striking but not necessarily pretty. It stands out on a bookshelf, looks good in your hands but it never really made me drool. That isn't to say I don't like it, because I do, but I think especially if you are putting them side by side, the first cover doesn't live up to the second one. The intricate design on the girl's face and the sprawling text across her mouth is beautiful and interesting and really draws the eye. I like both of these covers but for me it's no contest when it comes to which one is better.

Anna by Kendare Blake

What I find so appealing about these covers is that if they had gone with a photograph instead of a drawing, it might have been too creepy and too gruesome. That they chose to illustrate them allows me not to have to bury the book flap underneath the covers as I read. I love the dynamic scene set up in the first cover because it instantly makes me wonder what is going on. I feel the same why about the second one but I almost wish Anna wasn't reaching out. Wouldn't it have been cooler if she was staring at the book with a stoic sort of look on her face? Regardless, I love them both and feel they really captured the book's feeling!

Medusa Girls by Tera Lynn Childs

It's funny, I was pretty much ready to tell you all how I loved the first cover and really didn't like these two together. But then I actually put them together and saw how they worked. I think the first one is a little more interesting than just a face but the second cover compliments the first one perfectly from the colors chosen to the word font on the title. So I guess this goes to show how useful a family get together can actually be!

Winterhaven by Kristi Cook

I think that the second cover is better than the first but I just don't find these covers very appealing. Admittedly, I haven't gotten a chance to read the novels yet and they may work completely for them but I just don't see the appeal because there isn't much to look at. I do really like the color combo of blue, green and purple in the second cover. 

Which set are your favorite that we discussed today? For me, it's a three way tie between Stork, Anna and Daughter of Smoke and Bone but if I had to chose, I think Anna comes out on top!
