Interview & Giveaway! Kate Hewitt ~ Author of Far Horizons!

Welcome to Christian Bookshelf Reviews, Kate! Will you tell us a little about yourself?

I'm American but I live in England, in a tiny village on the northwest coast, with my husband and four children.

What is Far Horizons about?

Far Horizons is the story of two people who love each other but are separated by both distance and duty. Allan MacDougall asks Harriet Campbell to marry him on the eve of his departure to Canada, but his father finds this dishonourable and refuses to allow them to wed. They promise they'll wait for each other, and they must have faith in each other and God in order to find their way back together. The story is actually based on my great-great-great uncle and aunt, and the letters they wrote to each other that have been passed down through my family.

What is something the average reader wouldn't know about you?

I'm married to a minister!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I realized I wanted to be a writer quite young, but first I wanted to be a poet and then a journalist and then a playwright. I settled on novels when I was in my twenties.

How many books have you written/published and do you have a favourite?

I've written 23 romances for Harlequin and 3 historical novels through Robert Hale (in hardcover) and on Kindle. The story that is closest to my heart is Down Jasper Lane, which is in the tradition of Anne of Green Gables. I wrote the first draft when I was 18, and it was finally published nearly twenty years later, in a completely different version yet with the same characters. It is now available on Kindle.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I write in different fonts depending on the story and its mood--probably a leftover fascination with fonts from my first days with my own computer!

Where do you like to write?

I finally have my own study, but I still like to write at the kitchen table, which tends to be the warmest place in the house. I'm used to writing with chaos unfolding around me!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I'm involved in our church in a variety of ways, leading Sunday School and women's Bible study groups. I also love reading, gardening (although I'm not very good at it) and baking delicious but rather lumpy-looking cakes.

Is there a place you’d like to visit, but haven’t yet?

Many places! I'd love to go to India. I've read a lot of fiction set there and would love to see it for real.

Do you have a favorite song and/or movie?

My favourite hymn is Before The Throne of God Above. My favourite movie is probably Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which I used to watch with my dad.

What is your favorite dessert?

Creme brûlée!

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

John 4:19: 'We love because He first loved us'So much of the gospel is in that short little verse!

Here are a few this-or-that questions:

Snowstorms or Thunderstorms?

Snowstorms.

Tea or Coffee?

Coffee.

Kindle or Nook?

I have both but I prefer my Kindle.

Early-bird or Night-owl?

Neither? I like to go to bed early and sleep late--or as late as I can with four children.

Cats or Dogs?

Dogs--we have a Golden Retriever named Amica.

Are you currently working on any new novels? If so, could you give us a hint?

I'm working on the second book in my Amherst Island trilogy, and also a stand-alone novel called The Vicar's Wife (and it's not actually about me!)

Thanks so much for being here! Is there anything else you’d like to tell readers and where can we find you on the web?

You can find me on my website, www.kate-hewitt.com. Thanks so much for having me here, and happy reading!
